A few years ago our family started sponsoring a young girl called Praveena in southern India. Over the years we have heard and seen how a relatively small monthly donation of £21 from us, together with the work of Compassion, has radically changed and enhanced this young girl's life. It has been such a joy to witness and such a privilege to be part of.

Praveena is just one of thousands of children that Compassion has helped. Through their work they are both providing them with a hopeful future, where before there was none and lifting both them and their families out of extreme poverty. I am paying for all the travel expenses myself, so 100% of any donation goes to the charity.

I am taking part in this challenge for three reasons.

Firstly to raise money for what I consider to be one of the most inspiring charities around; where I know that every penny raised will bring hope and practical help to people's lives who otherwise would be in dire straits.

Secondly it offers me the wonderful opportunity to see how a Compassion project operates on the ground and see first hand where my fundraising is going.

Thirdly, since first travelling across Africa in 1985 when I was 19 I have been hopelessly in love with it. Seventeen years ago I made a spirited but rather disastrous attempt to make a life there. In those days climbing Kili was one of the goals I had set and never accomplished. This trip offers me the chance to try to set this record straight.
