Challenger Profile
Name:
Duncan Payne
Challenge Date:
27th - 8th March 2020
My Challenge:
I have no doubt that aspects of the trip will themselves be challenge. Before going though, I'd love to improve my overall fitness in preparation. However, the real challenge I'd like to set myself is to learn Swahili between now and when we head off.

I am a software engineer, working in the city of Sheffield - a city I have lived in since beginning university.
I spent the first 12 years of my life in two different African countries and have lived in the UK since moving back (apart from a brief stint in Germany).
My wife and I have supported Compassion UK for a number of years sponsoring children which has also provided 'pen pals' to each of our own children. I'd love to be able to support Compassion UK in other ways too and felt like this trek would be a good opportunity to do so.
Having grown up in east and southern Africa I have seen first-hand the effects of extreme poverty. I'm taking part in this challenge to help make a small difference where I can.
It will also be 10 years in 202o since I last visited the continent - so it feels like a good time to be returning. I'm looking forward to the challenges posed by this climb - both during the trek but also in the months prior as I prepare.
