I have been a member of St Marks church for the past 8 years and love the breadth of community outreach that the church is committed to.  I live and work in West/South-West London and spend some of my time as a GP and the rest teaching med-students the art and science of primary care.  I am always up for an adventure and this is just one of the many amazing things St Marks is involved in and something I am very excited to be embarking on.

At 5895m high Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, the fourth highest of the world’s Seven Summits and the highest free-standing mountain in the world.  It is HIGH and the challenge is to climb it!

The challenge is not only a physical one but also financial.  I am going to be self-funding all my own costs for the trip but would love people to join me in raising funds for Compassion.  On that note I have pledged to match all the sponsorship I receive (up to my fundraising target) so together I’m hoping we can double the impact for Compassion and the children of Africa.

For the past 5 years I have been sponsoring a little boy called Isaack through Compassion.  He lives in Mariakani outside Mombasa in Kenya and is now 10 years old.   Through our letters back and forth I have watched him grow and learn to read and write.  He now writes to me in English without the need of a translator and I am so proud of him!  So when St Marks announced the opportunity to visit our church-to-church partner (Mariakani Baptist Church) and the linked Compassion project AND our sponsored children I jumped at it like a shot.  Added to which the adventure of going on to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for Compassion made it all the more of a challenge and all the more worth while!

I wouldn’t say I’m an avid walker or mountain climber but I am always up for a challenge and this certainly will be one.  My head tends to be a little sensitive to life here at sea level so to say I’m apprehensive as to what altitude is going to do to me would be an understatement – but I’m going to give it a go.

Besides encouraging people to sponsor individual children we are raising money for a Compassion RESPOND Initiative that is designed to strengthen the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS specifically in the Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Manyara regions of Tanzania.  The project focuses on increasing HIV testing and counselling for early diagnosis, promoting behavioural change through enhanced knowledge and improving access to affordable care and treatment.

Climbing, or perhaps more aptly crawling, to the roof of Africa (however incapacitated by altitude) will definitely be worth it if it helps give children in the region a fighting start and improved access to healthcare.

If you want to join me in this mission please do donate and if you have any questions feel free to get in touch.  All donations will be hugely and gratefully received.  Thank you.
