I am teacher in Hertfordshire. Running my first marathon. I have been running for fun for a couple of years, but have never entered a race until Feb 2017. The world of lycra, running tights, and stinky tops are new to me.

This year I am taking part in the London Marathon, raising money for a charity called Compassion. Their goal is to see poverty eradicated in our lifetime.

Since my early teens my life has been about seeing young people reach their potential, especially those who are marginalised. I have worked in council estates, state schools, youth clubs, private schools, street corners, community centres, and churches all with the goal of enabling young people to reach their potential.

Claire and I have sponsored two children through compassion for 18 years. First Somchai and more recently Deo. We receive letters, write to them, and send them Christmas parcels. We are sponsoring them through their education.

So this year I am going further and running in the London Marathon to help Compassion raise money for new school classrooms in The Child Development Centre, Rushaka, Uganda. Pupils there have to shelter under the trees while having their lessons, and are exposed to the elements.

I work in a fantastic school, and I am aware of the high quality facilities surrounding me. It seems fitting that I raise money to support the development of basic facilities, that can provide a significant educational benefit to a large number of children.

But why running?

I used to hate running, I could see no point in it. However having taken up the sport of orienteering I wanted to get fitter. What I found was running was not only good for your health, I lost 15kg, even better, it was great for my mental health.

Our jobs and life at school, can provide us with pressure that causes stress. It is often difficult to often see beyond the walls of our work, and the ties of our to do lists.

Running has provided me with an escape, a way to organise my thoughts; a system where I can do nothing else but run, I can’t be interrupted. I can place the issues of the day into a context and find where the priorities lie.I can return to work in the afternoon or the next day knowing that the issues of the day do not define me as as a person.

Preparing for a marathon is tough. I spend a lot of time hobbling around. I find my body in pain. I am avoiding unhealthy foods I crave to eat, I spend hours away from my family plodding along boring Hertfordshire roads.

It is not just the 26 miles on the 24th April. It is the training leading up. I will have trained for 85 hours and run 500 miles before I even get to the start line.

However I am running to see poverty ended, and the pains and strains, the problems of my day fall into insignificance compared to the people I am running to help. I am blessed with a fortunate lifestyle and consider it my responsibility to support those less fortunate than me.
