The opportunity to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro with St. Marks is wonderful timing for me. What better way to mark my 45th year than to climb to the highest point on my home continent? 5,895m (19,341ft). I am supported by my family, especially Jamie and Serena who think I'm amazing for doing this, which is nice.

I grew up in Accra, Ghana and it has long been a dream of mine to climb this majestic mountain. Mainly, I am a grateful mother to my two children, but I also work part time as a lawyer, and I am in the process of writing my third novel, which is set in colonial Ghana.

I am a little daunted by the idea of taking on a mountain with all the unknown that nature can throw at us, including the cold (minus 15 in Africa?), sleeping in tents and altitude sickness. I am training hard, running for hours each week, and exercising muscles that had become dormant!

I am climbing Kilimanjaro to raise funds for Compassion's Leadership Development Program. This program enables students from very poor backgrounds, where further education would otherwise remain a pipe dream, to acquire higher education and in turn to help serve and lead their own communities. LDP thus empowers the students to be vessels of real change to the problems faced in the poorest communities in Africa.

Your support will help me to keep on keeping on, when everything hurts!

Every penny you donate will go to Compassion.

Love always, Marilyn. xx
